On slide gates, the common weld points are the rack mounting bar, the roller guide plates, and the end stops.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags toward the latch side and scrapes the driveway. A hinge weld that’s cracked at the post lets the whole gate drop a half-inch or more. The operator keeps pushing, which cracks it further. We see this most on heavier ornamental steel gates in Rancho Cucamonga where the original welds were undersized for the weight.
• The BFT arm jerks or stutters where it meets the gate. That’s usually the arm bracket wallowing out around its bolts. The operator runs a smooth arc, but the bracket has play, so the motion transfers as a hitch that worsens until the bracket ears snap.
• You find metal shavings or rust dust under the hinge area. A hinge pin running dry grinds itself and the surrounding weld. By the time you see the rust dust, the pin and the hinge barrel are both worn and the fix is a cut-out and re-weld, not a squirt of lubricant.

• The rack or chain jumps on a BFT slide gate. The rack mounting bar that’s welded to the gate frame has broken a section of weld, so the rack lifts under load and the motor’s gear skips a tooth. That skipping sound is metal damaging metal, and it doesn’t heal.

You can safely check a few things yourself. Look at the hinge welds for visible cracks or gaps. Push on the gate at the free end and watch for movement where metal meets post. Photograph what you find. But do not put a welder on a gate that’s hanging or under tension thinking you’ll tack it back. A gate under its own weight can shift while you’re welding, pinch, or fall.
