Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

• The gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor is drawing current but the arm isn’t transferring torque. In most BFT swing units, the internal gear or the coupling between motor and arm is worn or stripped. By the time it hums, it’s already been working harder than it should for months.
• The gate opens partway and stops. The obstruction-sensing logic is reading a false resistance. When the motor’s windings start to degrade, current draw rises even with no physical blockage, and the board interprets that as something in the path. This is a motor problem masquerading as a sensor problem, and it’s one we see regularly on BFT slide units out by the Vineyard area where track grit adds real resistance on top of the motor’s internal drag.
• The gate runs slow in one direction. One winding or one capacitor leg is failing, so the motor only produces full torque in a single phase. This usually shows up as “fine opening, sluggish closing,” and it gets worse as the capacitor continues to degrade.
• Burnt electrical smell near the motor housing. Failing winding insulation produces heat before it produces failure, and that heat has a smell. Don’t keep running the gate to see if it clears up; it won’t. A motor with burnt windings is a replacement, not a repair.
• The gate trips its breaker or GFCI repeatedly. Internal shorting in the motor can draw enough current to trip protection upstream. Once this starts, it tends to recur within days, not months.

DIY or Call Us?

BFT motors run on live electrical power, and the capacitor inside holds charge even after the breaker is off. If you’re comfortable with a multimeter and understand how to discharge a capacitor safely, you can confirm the motor is dead and read the model number for your own research. What you shouldn’t do is wire in a new motor while the capacitor is live, or mix a 24V motor into a 120V board because the mounting holes line up.
